Ravi: Tragic, shocking and very, very unfortunate! But this does happen in a few schools in India! No point in trying to pretend that such things don't happen.

Better to know the reality, confront it and see if one can contribute to changing it for the better. The brutal truth is that Kaam vasana (lust) has become very powerful in India now. Perhaps some movies, some Internet sites including on mobile smart phones, have contributed to it in a big way. These movies, Internet sites and mobile smart phones cannot be wished away (as of now, at least).

I think the solution for most parts of the country (excluding very controlled environments like some controlled hostels and ashrams), lies in accepting this reality of India today, and being very clear about what is legally permissible in terms of sexual behaviour and what is criminal!!! In particular, school girls who are minors (under 18 years of age) should be given special education and instructions about identifying and keeping away from sexual predators including sexual predators among their own teachers and principals, and reporting them to the police!!! Such is the brutal reality of life today in some parts of India.

Thank you, Ravi.  The fact is these things do not happen in "some" schools....they happen in many.  Teachers need to be carefully screened and the schools need to have each teacher, administrator, and other workers on the premises be a mandated reporter, meaning that they are required, by law, to report any such  abuse to the police.  What is going to happen if this is not implemented in India, as it is in the USA, for instance, is that there will be no retribution.  Eventually the schools will be sued and damages will have to be paid.  And, for the record, boys, not only girls must be educated in these matters while they are quite young.  Many children are also abused by drivers who take them to school, and sadly by their own caregivers and family members.  Meanwhile, the numbers of rapes of boys and underage males is equal to that of girls.
