Anatomy of planned desecration and riots in Bangladesh, https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/anatomy-of-planned-desecration-and-riots-in-bangladesh-101634792814812.html , 21st Oct. 2021.

Ravi: Good to see that police in the Bangladesh city of Cumilla, are unearthing a conspiracy to fan communal divide in that city and elsewhere in Bangladesh.

As a Hindu my view is that Bangladesh police should let the truth in this sensitive matter which has taken the lives of some innocent Hindus in Bangladesh, be known, and ensure that any culprits irrespective of their religion, are dealt with severely as per laws of Bangladesh.

It is a 2 day old matter but I had not followed it up then. Looked it up a little while back today and was happy to see that the succession issue in Baghambari math has been resolved with Balbir Giri being made Mahant (leader) of Baghambari Math. The following video provides some glimpses of both the sixteenth day ritual honouring the passed away leader Narendra Giri, followed by the anointing of Balbir Giri as the new Mahant (leader) by leaders of the Akhara Parishad:

In our early 21st century times, sexual abuse in spiritual and religious institutions worldwide (including India) is one of the major issues that seekers/followers of spirituality & religion (which includes me) must help to ideally eradicate, or at least ensure that if it happens, the victims are rescued quickly and the perpetrators are brought to justice in reasonable time after giving them a fair trial.

While on the one hand it is very sad to know of these horrible acts that happened in the Roman Catholic church in France over the last seventy years, I think that we have to appreciate the efforts made by the commission to bring out this truth and share it with the public. That, I think, will help prevent or at least reduce such crimes happening in spiritual and religious institutions in France.

I also appreciate the public seeking of forgiveness by the French bishops.

French Bishops Seek Forgiveness After Damning Church Sex Abuse Report, https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/french-bishops-ask-for-forgiveness-after-report-released-on-church-sex-abuse-2564447 , 5th Oct. 2021.

A few extracts from the above report:

French clergy have sexually abused more than 200,000 children over the past 70 years, a major investigation released on Tuesday found, and its authors accused the Catholic Church of turning a blind eye for too long and urged it to reform.

...

Speaking just after Sauve [Ravi: head of the commission] at the public presentation of the report, the archbishop of Reims and head of the French conference of bishops, Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, spoke of shame, asked for forgiveness and promised to act.

The commission was established by Catholic bishops in France at the end of 2018 to shed light on abuses and restore public confidence in the church at a time of dwindling congregations. It has worked independently from the Church.

Sauve said the problem was still there. He added that the church had until the 2000s shown complete indifference to victims and that it only started to really change its attitude in 2015-2016.

...

There have been around 2,900-3,200 suspected paedophiles in the French church over the last 70 years, he added.

--- end extracts from report ---

Ravi: The issue is sexual abuse. Sexual hypocrisy of priests and spiritual leaders who claim to be celibate publicly but privately indulge in consensual sex with consenting adults is a different matter. That is not a crime, even if it brings into question the validity of the preachings and teachings of the concerned priests/spiritual leaders, especially on matters related to sexual behaviour.

[I thank ndtv.com and have presumed that they will not have any objections to me sharing the above extract(s) from their website on this post which is freely viewable by all, and does not have any financial profit motive whatsoever. I don't know about Mitra foundation. But if what is mentioned in the post is true, I think that's a very good thing.

Lack of decent jobs for youngsters from Puttaparthi area (I am including Kothacheruvu and Bukkapatnam mandals when I say Puttaparthi area) is a big problem for Puttaparthi area locals. The corona pandemic has made the situation really bad as the Puttaparthi economy which is dependent on large number of devotees visiting Puttaparthi, has been devastated due to very few devotees visiting Puttaparthi.

So I am happy to see this effort, presuming the post's contents are accurate.

Julio Ribeiro mentions then state minister Shankarrao Chavan being happy with his work as SP of Nanded from Nov. 1959 to Jun. 1962

I am finding Julio Ribeiro's autobiography, Bullet for Bullet, My life as a police officer, to be an absorbing read.

I was fascinated to read about Ribeiro's work in Nanded as SP from November 1959 to June 1962 with then state minister Shankarrao Chavan (S.B. Chavan), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shankarrao_Chavan , being the important political leader there. Ribeiro finished his term in Nanded in June 1962, as he had been transferred to Solapur district. Ribeiro writes, "When I went to say goodbye to Shankarrao Chavan, he said to me that he had been very happy with my work and performance, particularly after the tenure of my predecessor, who had been transferred by the chief minister at his specific request." Ribeiro had not been told earlier about this background of his predecessor's transfer.

I was fascinated to read this as Shri S.B. Chavan was one of the top leaders of Maharashtra during most of my life in Maharashtra (from 1962 to 2002). Not only was S.B. Chavan two time Chief Minister of Maharashtra (1975-77 and 1986-88), he also was Union Home Minister twice (1984-86 and 1991-96) and Union Finance Minister once (1988-1989). He seems to have been one of top political leaders of Maharashtra state as well as the country perhaps from mid 1970s to mid 1990s.

And, very importantly for me, he was a devotee of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I can still recall how awed I was to see him from quite close, perhaps ten to twenty feet, as he walked from the VIP gate in Sai Kulwant hall towards the verandah, prior to Bhagavan darshan. Perhaps this was sometime in 2003. If I recall correctly, he was being helped to walk by some assistant of his. He was very aged then (born in 1920 as per the wiki page). He passed away in Feb. 2004.

I was somewhat surprised to read in Ribeiro's book that S.B. Chavan was already a minister in Maharashtra in 1962! On thinking about it, I should not have been surprised as he was already 42 years old in 1962. Somehow I had not realized how long an innings as a powerful political leader of Maharashtra, the Late S.B. Chavan had played.

Note that his son, Shri Ashok Chavan, is also a former chief minister of Maharashtra and Ashok Chavan too is a devotee of Bhagavan, and has visited Prasanthi Nilayam many times.

Good to see that the Baghambari Math succession issue seems to be getting resolved.

"Balbeer Giri named math chief after seer's suicide" .. "Balbeer Giri will be appointed as next Pithadishwar (Math head) of Baghambari Gaddi Math in Prayagraj in a ceremony on October 5.", https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/balbeer-giri-named-successor-to-mahant-narendra-giri-101632855061376.html , 29th Sep. 2021

The article mentions that Balbeer Giri has been named as successor in Late Mahant Narendra Giri's last will of 2020, and also in the (alleged) suicide note.

The Akhara Parishad leaders also seem to be fine with Balbeer Giri being the successor, and so that reduces room for any dispute.

Out of my general interest in contemporary Hinduism, especially in India, I am quite interested to understand how the successor of Baghambari Math in Prayagraj (old name: Allahabad) will be chosen. I find this interview of the secretary of the Akhara parishad to be interesting as the secretary says (my understanding of his words) that the previous Mahant of Baghambari Math, Mahant Narendra Giri, does not have the (sole) power to appoint a successor as the Math was not his private property, and was instead a "sarvajanik" - devotee-public - property. The Math's assets have come through donations of devotees and the secretary says that the Akhara parishad wants to ensure that such assets are properly used. He talks of a selection of the Mahant of Baghambari Math by a meeting of leaders of Akhara parishad!

The interviewer gives the view of a lawyer that it is the will of the deceased Math head - Mahant Narendra Giri - that decides the successor and that the Akhara parishad does not have a say in it. That view is rejected by the Akhara parishad secretary.

Let us see how this successor matter gets settled.

Succession in Hindu ashram systems in India can get to be quite tricky at times. I find that to be quite disturbing. I think there should be well established norms for succession in Hindu ashram systems in India and the government(s) (union and/or state) should ensure that significant sized Hindu ashram systems follow such norms.

Very interesting to know about some Russian women praying to trees in the past. ... Communism would have attacked all such practices and tried to remove it from the culture. I wonder whether Russian women pray to trees in our times now with Russia having got out of communism for a few decades now.

In India, women pray to trees even today, including in my former state of Maharashtra. Here is a related June 2017 article with the city referenced being Thane in Maharashtra: City women worship banyan trees for husbands’ well being, https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/thane/city-women-worship-banyan-trees-for-husbands-well-being/articleshow/59057995.cms .

The devotional traditions and depth of devotion that (most) Indian women have is awesome! I have learned that over the years and today I am very respectful of devotional traditions of (most) Indian women. I think it is this depth of devotion that helps (most) Indian women to nurture their families through thick and thin. Families are the bedrock of society (even ascetics are dependent on family people to cater to some of their basic needs like food) and thus I don't think I would be wrong if I said that such devotional depth of (most) Indian women nurtures Indian society through thick and thin!

After some thought, I decided to share this news video. It has views of some people of Prayagraj (old name Allahabad) about the supposed suicide of the famous holy man/spiritual leader of their city - Mahant Narendra Giri. While it is portrayed as an interview with people on the street, some of the main interviewees seem to be community leaders of some sort. It is in Hindi and has a lot of gossipy stuff but which may have some kernels of truth in it.

One view is very noteworthy. A person says that if a saint/spiritual leader is driven to commit suicide in these days, one can imagine what will be the plight of the ordinary man who reveres such a saint! I think that really captures the shock of many in India in this matter.

Of course, there is talk about whether it is a suicide or a killing staged as a suicide, given the amount of assets and money the ashram controls.

Narendra giri के साम्राज्य, पैसे, राजनीतिक रुतबे और मौत पर Prayagraj वालों के खुलासे | Anand giri, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMoblgX0Ly8 , around 30 mins. published today (22nd Sep. 2021) by The Lallantop.

...

I found this video interview (in Hindi with little bit of English here and there) to be interesting as it gives us the views of Anand Giri, the main disciple of Mahant Narendra Giri, who is reportedly named along with two others, in the suicide note as the people (allegedly) driving the Mahant to commit suicide. This interview is before the tragic event. Anand Giri comes across as an accomplished speaker (which does not necessarily make him a good person but it is clear that he is not an ordinary person).

अखाड़े से निष्कासन के बाद Anand Giri ने Narendra Giri पर क्या कहा? Kumbh | Prayagraj, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo0cj3UkINw , around 40 mins., published on 6th June 2021 by The Lallantop.

...

Anand Giri's photos showing his interest in a luxury lifestyle have been an important aspect of this story as covered in Indian media. Here's a relevant recent article: Beaches to bikes, the high-flying ‘yoga guru’ Anand Giri caught in suicide, https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/lucknow/beaches-to-bikes-the-high-flying-yoga-guru-caught-in-suicide-row-7528378/ .

-----------

I don't know much about the deceased Hindu spiritual leader Mahant Narendra Giri. But the circumstances of his death are very disturbing. As a Hindu citizen and resident of India, I would very much like to know whether there was any foul play involved.

Even if the tragic death is confirmed as suicide by the investigation, I would like to know, and I think the Indian public at large would like to know, what the circumstances were, which drove the Hindu spiritual leader to commit suicide.

Good to see that U.P. CM is assuring a proper investigation and that any culprits will be given the strictest punishment (actually, I think that has to done by a court of law with the public prosecutor & police making the case in court; perhaps the CM will ensure that the public prosecutor & police will do a proper job).

Indian union and state governments along with courts of law should ensure that ashram functionaries in Hindu ashram systems in India, no matter which state of India they are in, clearly realize that they are under the law of the land, and if any ashram functionary in a quest for power, commits a serious crime leading to death of any ashram leader or any other person in the ashram, that functionary will be held accountable in an Indian court of law.

Jeffrey Armstrong's (Kavindra Rishi) talks on Vedic Vidya are interesting and thought-provoking but sometimes they have provocative remarks which could be viewed as controversial.

I enjoyed this video of his which does have some provocative/controversial statements and so readers who view it will have to give Armstrong some freedom on that. But overall, I found the video's message to be just great. It speaks a lot about the reality of each of us being the deathless Atma and how Yoga teaches us that. He talks of how such knowledge can greatly reduce fear and tension in our lives.

Very interestingly, he mentions that larger number of women than men do yoga, and he connects that with women having much more complex and refined bodies than men. He refers to the "equipment" (if I recall the term he used correctly) women have to create new humans, which men don't have! That is so true and it is great to see Armstrong highlight this in the video.

I came across a new acronym in the video: DNR. It stands for Do Not Resuscitate order, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_not_resuscitate .

Came across this interesting Bible quote:

1 Timothy 6:9

New International Version

"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.", https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Timothy%206%3A9&version=NIV

-------------------

Interesting that the Bible warns people not to desire to get rich.

I think three major religions whose origins were in Indian sub-continent - Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism - limit such warnings to not desire riches mainly to ascetic-type spiritual aspirants. [I should add that I am quite sure about Hinduism in this regard but have only limited idea about Buddhism and Jainism.]

I don't know what Sikhism - another religion whose origins were in Indian sub-continent - says in this regard.

Hundreds of anti-Taliban protestors take to streets of Afghan capital - BBC News, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSwiiKGzdWI , 2 min. 53 secs., published on 8th Sept. 2021.

Ravi: On the one hand, it is impressive to see young women in Kabul dare to speak out and protest, but towards the end of the video we see the 'reality bite' where the Taliban forces simply fire their guns into the air which seems to at least stop the protests temporarily or perhaps even disperse the protesters.

Very clearly, the Taliban's main source of power is the gun and their willingness to use it to scare even non-violent protesters. This time they just fired into the air. If things do not come under control, they may do something horrific.

Historically, imperialist powers and invaders-cum-settlers have used their superior warrior skills to brutally suppress resistance from conquered people (including the British in India e.g. Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and the white settlers in USA who brutally marginalized the Native Americans ('Red Indians'), not to speak of the horrific practice of slavery of African people who were forcibly brought to USA). Even in the first half of the 20th century, we saw horrific marginalization of conquered peoples by German and Japanese imperialist powers in World War II, till they were defeated by the Allies.

I should add that prior to British becoming the dominant power in India (after the Third Anglo-Maratha war from 1817 to 1819 which the British won decisively and conclusively, ending Maratha empire in India), various kingdoms in India some under Hindu kings and some under Muslim kings, were also having wars between themselves. At least some of these kings were as brutal as the British were later on, in crushing resistance in conquered territories. So it is not a European origin (white) or Asian issue here. I think brutality of rulers towards any resistance from conquered people, was just the reality of life in past centuries.

But now in early 21st century to see non-violent protests being stopped using automatic/semi-automatic gunfire into the air by government forces, is very disturbing. And as I live in South Asia (India), it is very disturbing for me to see this happening in South Asia.

India sees more than its fair share of non-violent protests. Police, at times, use lathi-charge (lathi is a stick) where they beat the protesters with sticks to prevent the non-violent protesters force their ways into areas the police don't want them to go.

Perhaps over time as the Taliban 2.0 government stabilizes, they will stop using gunfire to control such protests and use sticks or something similar to control the crowd.
