Total views of this blog crosses 1 million

This blog's total views crossed 1 million views a few days back. The blog was started in August 2013 and so this is over a period of 12 years and few months. I felt it appropriate to record this milestone with a post.  Perhaps it may be of interest to some readers.

I am not active on this blog for the past two years or so. Excluding tiny referral posts which simply refer to posts I have put up on some of my other blogs, I have put up 25 posts on this blog in past two years or so (from October 2023), making it an average of around 2 posts per month. So it is quite interesting that Blogger stats for the past 12 months (for this blog) reports 136K (136,000) views. Surely some of these views are from non-human bots and also referral spam which cannot be considered as genuine views.

Visitors can see the total count of views in the menu of this blog, which is usually accessible from top left menu dropdown in blog window or in the left side menu panel in a large width window (>= 1440 pixels, I think) on PC desktop/tablet. You have to scroll down in the menu dropdown/panel to see the figure. Given below is a pic I took of it recently from this blog.

More stats details are available in Blogger dashboard (for author/administrator) which is not accessible to visitors.

Here is a summary of a chat I had with ChatGPT (CG) few weeks ago as this blog's total views were approaching 1 million views (summary prepared by CG as per my specifications; slightly edited to fix error(s)).

🌼 ChatGPT Summary on Reaching 1 Million Lifetime Views (Blogger Stats)

The blog “Ravi S. Iyer: Spiritual” has recently reached the 1 million total pageviews mark on Blogger. Started in August 2013, the blog has, over twelve years, served mainly as a chronicle of spiritual experiences and as a space for the author’s personal reflections on Vedanta, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and broader questions of spiritual inquiry.

In the context of spiritual blogging — a niche that naturally draws a smaller, more contemplative readership compared to popular themes like technology, career development, or finance — the figure of one million lifetime views represents a significant and meaningful achievement. It reflects long-term visibility and sustained interest in the content, even during periods when new posts were infrequent.

However, this number must be understood in light of Blogger’s statistical limitations. The built-in “Stats” page is known to include traffic from automated sources such as bots, web crawlers, or spam-commenting tools. Therefore, a portion of the total view count almost certainly represents non-human visits.

Even so, based on typical Blogger traffic patterns, it is reasonable to assume that a substantial share of the total — possibly around half or more — consists of genuine human readers who encountered and read the posts over the years through search engines, links, or social media references. Even a conservative estimate of around half a million authentic reads would still be impressive for a one-person, non-commercial spiritual blog.

The blog currently receives very few genuine comments, as most of the incoming comments are spam advertisements that are deleted or marked as spam. This low comment activity does not necessarily indicate low engagement, since readers of spiritual material often read silently and reflect privately rather than posting responses.

According to Blogger’s all-time country-wise statistics, the viewership shows a wide global spread:

  • United States – 271K

  • India – 209K

  • France – 73.5K

  • United Kingdom – 47.4K

  • Russia – 46.5K

  • Hong Kong – 41.6K

  • Sweden – 41.2K

  • Singapore – 32.6K

  • Germany – 15.4K

  • Other countries – 215K

While the geographical data may also contain some automated traffic, the pattern overall aligns with a realistic global distribution for English-language spiritual content.

Taken together, these observations suggest that the 1 million views milestone — though partly inflated by automated traffic — remains a noteworthy indicator of genuine reach and enduring relevance. Over twelve years, the blog’s reflections have likely been read by hundreds of thousands of real people worldwide, demonstrating the quiet but persistent impact of authentic spiritual writing in the online space.

The entire chat is shared publicly: Spiritual blog 1 million views.

Some excerpts from the chat (prior to summary) are given below.

Me: One of my blogs - https://ravisiyer.blogspot.com/ - is currently having a total of 993193 views. I had started the blog in August 2013. So it is 12 years old. Over past 2 to 3 years I have not been so active on my blog but my older posts continue to get visited. So I am close to 1 million views. For a spiritual blog (which will have lesser level of attraction as compared to a blog related to making money or career advancement), is 1 million views a significant achievement? Please be frank.
...

Me: I do not get many genuine comments on my blog. In fact, the large majority of comments I get are advertisements for other sites and which comments I mark as spam or delete.

I don't know whether these viewership numbers are genuine reader views or some manual/automatic spam blogger comments software views.

Country wise, there is quite a spread (for all time views) as per Blogger Stats:

---snipped as above summary has it---

But i don't know how genuine these stats are. I mean, some blog scraper kind of software could even be providing fake country-origin info.

What's ur view?

Summary judgment

Yes — a portion of your 993K Blogger views are likely from bots or scrapers, but a substantial portion is almost certainly genuine. Even if we assume only 50% are real, half a million thoughtful readers [Ravi: it should be reads not readers; thoughtful is an exaggerated presumption 😊, IMHO] over a dozen years remains a significant, meaningful accomplishment for a one-person, spiritual blog .
...

Me: ... I don't mind the summary being longish. It should cover the main points we discussed regarding the lifetime figure.

You see, I view my role mainly as two parts: as a chronicler and as sharing my own spiritual journey and views. For both these roles as a blogger/writer, I want it to be as authentic as feasible.

A reader who reads the 1 million views milestone post should know the valuable points that you shared with me about how to "interpret" that figure. BTW I plan to make this chat a public one and share the link to that in the milestone post. However, most readers will only want to read the summary and not go through our entire chat.

In the past, I had put up two such milestone posts for this blog. ...

1) On 17 July 2017, Total views of this blog cross 250,000 (quarter million), https://ravisiyer.blogspot.com/2017/07/total-views-of-this-blog-cross-250000.html

2) On 4 November 2018, Total views of this blog cross 500,000 (half a million) , https://ravisiyer.blogspot.com/2018/11/total-views-of-this-blog-cross-500000.html
...

Me: ... I would like above summary to be in neutral voice rather than mine. I will be  mentioning that it is ChatGPT summary.
